What are the meaning of colors in mood rings? This fun and popular 70s-inspired jewelry item has fascinated people for years, in large part because of the what the colors are said to represent.

What Are Mood Rings?

Mood rings are fun jewelry accessories that first arrived on the scene back in the 1970s, but you can still find them today in specialty stores and on the internet.
The purpose of these rings is quite simple, even if the science behind them isn't. Mood rings are designed to show how you're feeling anytime you're wearing them. They do this by changing through a series of colors that correlate to a number of individual moods.

How Do Mood Rings They Work?

Liquid crystals are the secret to the mood ring's changing array of colors. The clear glass stone in the ring is either filled with the liquid crystals or sits directly on top of a thin layer of the substance that has been adhered to a sterling setting.

Liquid crystals are extremely sensitive to heat, and will twist their position in response to a rise or drop in temperature. Light comes in many different wavelengths and each is reflected to our eyes as a different color. The position of the crystals determines which wavelengths of light are absorbed and which are reflected back to us, and this is what makes the stone appear to change color.

Color Charts

The meaning of colors in mood rings can be a little confusing. Some rings come with a color chart that explains which color goes with which mood, but many pieces do not.First, take a look at the chart below, and then learn hoe the body changes dictated by your emotional frame of mind can affect the surface temperature of your skin.

Body Temperature

Now, for a few examples of how your mood affects your body temperature.
Have you ever felt a warm glow of happiness or contentment come over you? The body actually feels slightly warmer when feeling happy or romantic because the capillaries move a little closer to the skin surface, releasing more warmth and causing that well-known blush that creeps into the cheeks from time to time. This extra warmth causes the crystals in a mood ring to alter their position, resulting in shades of blue. An extremely warm reaction might even cause the color to deepen to purple, considered the color of passion.
Now consider the other end of the spectrum. Have you ever felt anxious enough to break out in a cold sweat? The extra moisture on the surface of your skin works like an evaporative cooling machine, lowering your surface temperature. Some people describe the feeling as clammy, but your mood ring picks up this change in your body temperature, and the liquid crystals rearrange themselves in ways that reflect the lighter colors in their spectrum, with shades ranging from amber to green.
An absence of heat will turn the stone black, and this is how the ring will normally appear when no one is wearing it, unless it is left in the sun or close to another heat source.

Are Mood Rings Accurate?

As you may surmise by now, the meaning of colors in mood rings may not be a completely accurate reflection of a person's current feelings, but they will generally make it into the ballpark under average circumstances.
Room temperature and your health can also have an affect on the color of your ring. Sitting in a sweltering room on a summer day, or having a fever, doesn't necessarily make you feel passionate, but your mood ring will still reflect a deep blue or purple color. It's all open to interpretation, but that's just part of the fun.
Now you know the science behind the meaning of colors in mood rings. The key here is not to take anything too seriously. Mood rings are meant for fun, so have some while you're wearing one.******for some reason..mine keeps turning blue then purple sometimes with a little pink it in...those other colours are completely non-existant to me...also...here's a sweet quote that I came across.. :) "If we could trade eyes, and I have yours and you have mine, then you could truly see what you mean to me..."

"The color blue is often used to represent a relaxed, calm and open (receptive) state. Blue is associated with both a cooler temperature and temperament. It is usually the color you want to “aim” for, from a biofeedback perspective.

A healer’s aura is often blue. To be a healer, you not only have to be strong to avoid the damaging effects of negative from the sick or wounded, but also have enough positive energy left over to focus and direct it as a healing energy.

Blue represents the throat chakra. The throat serves many purposes, especially communication and speech, so blue may represent creative expression in almost any form… but, mainly speech. The throat is also home to the thyroid gland, and since the thyroid is often associated with growth and maturity, blue could signify life-changing experiences that will help you grow up in general.

In a biblical context, blue was often used to represent wealth and affluence. But that could be more from a historical fact of life during those times. Most high school history text books have at least one blurb about the expense of certain dyes used in clothing made centuries ago. Back in those days, the average person had a fairly drab wardrobe. Only kings, queens and other royalty could afford brightly colored clothing. Blue and purple were the most rare and expensive dyes and therefore commonly associated with wealth.

In dreams, the color blue is also very positive… often representing spirituality, art, philosophy, culture, etc. People in blue are often healers, or people who are trying to help you heal yourself. This is especially true if the person is wearing blue and gold. Primarily, in dreams, blue is the color of life.

In Wiccan literature, blue is considered a color of truth, wisdom, calmness, tranquility, patience and understanding. All positive. But, it’s interesting to note that even the Wiccan references note blue as being a “healing” color, and also associates it with feminity. Females are often considered healers, due to their unrivaled capacity for empathy and are often natural caregivers. Note: You do not have to be a female to be an amazing healer, as I have met many males that have phenomenal healing abilities, especially in the practice of Reiki.

If your mood ring color is blue, it means that your vibrational energies are at their optimum levels for health and healing. It is a good time to help someone in need, as your efforts will do the most good during this time. Donate some time to charity, volunteer at the soup kitchen, visit a sick loved one. This is a perfect time to utilize your healing energy to help someone… ANYONE… who is in need of a healer.

Or, better yet, go to the nursing home and offer to visit someone in need of some company. If you are more of a listener than a talker, it would be the perfect way to give back to the universe. The elderly love to be around younger individuals who are ginuinely interested and receptive to what they are saying (in other words, please listen more than you talk). Note: It’s often better if you set this up ahead of time, as the management staff may be suspicious of a stranger coming in off the street to visit one of their residents.

If none of these are options, perhaps it’s a good time to heal yourself. Physical healing is sometimes even less important than healing mental and emotional scars. When your healing energy is high, you are less likely to shy away from the work necessary to do this. Self-healing requires many tough questions, objective self-examination and honest answers. There is no better time to embark on this path than when your mood ring color is blue."

Black, Gray and White

  • Black is typically the color displayed of a mood ring while it's not being worn. If black is displayed while it is on someone's finger, it is thought to indicate that the wearer is extremely stressed, tense, overworked or ill. Although gray is seen less often than black, it is thought to mean that the wearer is sad, tired, afraid or anxious. White on a mood ring is usually associated with feeling confused, bored or frustrated.

Green

  • Green is the color calibrated to the average surface skin temperature, so it is considered the most "normal" or "ideal" of the mood ring colors. Green typically signifies that the wearer is feeling calm and peaceful. A dark green color, such as jade and emerald, might indicate the wearer is feeling alert and involved, while a bright green color means a person is feeling interested and inquisitive. Greens with a hint of blue, such as deep teal and verdigris, are associated with contemplation, motivation and thoughtfulness.

Blue

  • A blue color in a mood ring is generally understood to mean that the wearer is in a happy, peaceful or relaxed state of mind. Dark blue colors may show up when a person is feeling passionate or romantic. Blue-violet and indigo colors are often associated with satisfaction, tranquility and inner harmony. A teal or aquamarine blue might mean the wearer is in an upbeat or flirtatious mood. Cobalt blue signifies the wearer is approachable and pleasant.

Red and Orange

  • Warmer mood ring colors are thought to signify a more intense or enthusiastic state of mind. Deep reds hint at passion, arousal and feelings of love. A brighter red indicates that the wearer is feeling excited, adventurous, angered or alarmed. Dark orange mood rings can signify that the wearer is feeling impatient, nervous, exasperated, worried or even aggressive. A yellow-orange color might mean that the wearer is feeling a little bit nervous, upset or confused.

Yellow and Brown

  • Yellow is a color often associated with mental processes. A yellow color in a mood ring may signify the wearer is feeling imaginative or curious. Bright yellow could show up on the ring of a person studying for an exam or writing a heartfelt poem. Dark browns might indicate restlessness, worries, troubles or fear. A yellow-brown color like amber is thought to signify mixed emotions. A color leaning more toward taupe can hint at unpredictability, stress, aggravation or angst.

Pink and Purple

  • Pink is a color with multiple meanings. A pink mood ring typically signifies that the wearer is feeling calm, cool and rested. However, a bright pink color, such as magenta or fuchsia, means that the wearer is feeling loving, affectionate and happy. A light pink might demonstrate uncertainty, bemusement or fear. A dark purple color signifies an individual is feeling sensual, passionate or romantic. A reddish-purple is more likely to be associated with moodiness, anger and despair.
